12 Gifts for Elderly Loved Ones
December has and will always be a time of joy, celebration and most notably, gifts. Getting gifts for loved ones can be a bit difficult, especially for your elderly loved ones. Having to do research for popular or best gifts for the elderly can get tedious. That’s why I’m listing down my list of gifts for elderly loved ones that often need help, have some form of dementia or aren’t able to get around well.
Choosing Gifts
When choosing what to give, your first and main priority should be to answer “will they use it.” Of course, this doesn’t apply to all gifts but is very important when buying for elderly loved ones. You need to consider their limited capabilities and what they actually need to make their daily lives easier.
Love and Care
It goes without saying that the best gift to give your elderly loved ones would be more than the usual amount of love, care and attention. You can easily show these three things by giving them gifts that suit both their wants and needs. You need to make sure that what you give your elderly loved ones are things that they would actually want to have and use.
Gifts for Seniors
Here is my list of things that I found very popular for elderly loved ones. Though again, you need to consider gifts that your senior would actually love to have and use. Hopefully my list covers the ones that you’ve considered getting or that your elderly loved one wanted to get.
Alarm Clock
An alarm clock is an amazing gift to give to your elderly loved ones. You have to make sure though that what you get is easy to see and use. Personally, I would get the digital battery alarm clocks. They are easy to see, use and some models can actually provide for the date and even temperature.
Acupressure Massage Slippers
Acupressure works by massaging parts of your foot that somehow help in giving relief to the different parts of your body. There have been recorded health benefits regarding acupressure slippers. Wearing and using them to walk around have shown to help greatly in reducing body pain. They are both comfortable and a must have for elderly loved ones who are fond of walking.
Pill Box
A useful and thoughtful gift to give your elderly loved ones is a pill box or pill organizer. Not only will this help in keeping their medications but will also make sure that your elderly loved ones can take the right pills for the day. Having one will greatly help both your elderly loved ones and their home care assist with organizing any medications.
Massage Chair
A lot of people see massage chairs as excessive or unnecessary gifts. However, for elderly loved ones, these chairs can easily make their daily lives much better. Massage chairs provide a number of health benefits and have been known to be effective in getting rid of fatigue. Note though that you need to get ones that will be both comfortable and safe for your elderly loved one to use.
Diffuser
Diffusers work by dispersing fragrant vapor into the air. This process is commonly known as aromatherapy and is widely known to be beneficial, specially to the elderly. Aromatherapy has been known to help improve sleep, reduce stress and even anxiety. Lastly, the essential oils used with diffusers are safe and even help in keeping their sinuses clear by being decongestants.
Virtual Assistants
Having virtual assistants are unbelievably helpful with seniors and caregivers alike. Your elderly parents will have an easier time going about their plans for the day, among other things, if they have virtual assistants. Alexa for example can easily provide for their schedules, reminders and even help answer any question they need answering. Just make sure that you teach them with patience regarding maintaining and using virtual assistant tools.
Heated Blanket
People often get second thoughts getting heated blankets for seniors since there have been reports regarding safety. Heated blankets, like all tools, can get dangerous if not handled properly. That is why you need to make sure to get more advanced ones that have limiters on or automatic shutoff features. Heated blankets are actually perfect for the elderly since they can give ample warmth to their cold prone b odies.
Memory Book
Memory books are one of the best gifts that you can get or even make for your elderly loved ones. Getting one or having one done for you would be more than enough to give significant impact in your elderly loved one’s daily life. However, making one, specially together with your elderly loved one, will make for an everlasting memory with them. Fill up your memory book with sentimental vacation photos, movie tickets or anything that can remind your elderly loved ones of wonderful times in their lives.
Digital Photo Frames
Digital photo frames have been fairly popular gifts. These frames can easily be connected to your phones to display particular set albums or a single specific picture. Some can even display short looping videos. Your elderly loved ones will definitely love having one since not only are they amazing to look and have but can easily be used and maintained.
Leg Warmers
Cotton leg warmers are perfect for elderly who have constant joint pains. Contrary to what a lot of people often think, leg warmers aren’t just good for the winter season. They can be used wherever or whenever your elderly loved one feels cold or if their knees need a little bit of warmth during cold nights. Lastly, you can even make a pair yourself so that you can add a more personalized touch to the gift. Stitching their names or customizing it to their liking is sure to have them smile from ear to ear when they get it.
Canes
Canes would be another perfect gift for elderly loved ones, especially ones that have difficulty in walking or moving about. A good cane can properly give enough support that your elderly loved one can easily walk without feeling any discomfort. Walking is a very important exercise for the elderly and having a sturdy and comfortable cane can help greatly.
Security Camera
Getting both indoor and outdoor security cameras are a must nowadays. Not only will it give additional safety but you can also easily monitor your elderly loved ones wherever and whenever. Having a camera out on the front door will make identifying visitors quicker, easier and safer. You can also connect both the indoor and outdoor cameras to yours and your elderly loved one’s phone for ease of access.
Sincerity and Gifts
People can easily get the most expensive gifts for their loved ones. However, that doesn’t guarantee that they will like and less likely love what was given. Listening and communicating with the person you’re giving your gift is the key to getting the best gifts. In the case of your elderly loved ones, being attentive and conscious of what they want and need should also be considered. Remember, you can easily gift without really showing love but when you gift something with sincerity, it shows that you care and actually want that person in your life.
