Walking and even standing for a period of time can get exhausting for our feet. The elderly feel this difficulty even more, especially if they have foot conditions! That is why specialists have created orthopedic or orthotic shoe components. But are they the same though? In this article, I’ll talk about orthotics vs orthopedics and which one you should get if ever needed.
Orthotic Shoes vs. Orthopedic Shoes
Foot and Heel Support and Comfort
I’d like to start things off with the common ground on orthotics vs orthopedics. Both orthopedic and orthotic shoes help relieve any pain and give the best foot support! Most of their differences lie in their nature and designs. But, you can rest assured that getting either for an elderly loved one is a good idea!
What are Orthotic Shoes?
Orthotics are devices that help with foot and ankle conditions. They are basically like shock absorbers for your feet! Custom-made orthotics shoes are heaven-sent gifts for a lot of people since they help so much! Anyone who’s ever gotten one only has praise for them since walking will never be the same without them.
Orthotics are inserts or insoles which you can insert in any shoe you own. They can be of different materials, depending on your specifications and foot form. Though the main thing you need to remember is that they provide support, cushion, and comfort!
Orthotic Shoes vs. Inserts
You can see shoe inserts everywhere nowadays! Just earlier today I saw one while visiting the convenience store near my place. Shoe inserts are those flappy and thin foam-like things that people “insert” in their shoes. It does give a level of comfort and is a must-have for a lot of people!
Now, are orthotics and inserts the same? The answer is a resounding no! All orthotics are inserts but they are especially and specifically made. Inserts are more of a “one size fits all” kind of general molding. That’s why not all inserts are orthotics shoe components.
Should I Get Orthotics?
If you’ve already asked the question before or while reading this, chances are you should! Orthotic shoes aren’t only for people who have foot conditions. A lot of people also get them to ease constant foot pain or discomfort.
You can get over-the-counter or off-the-shelf ones that are a good fit for a majority of feet. They’re easy to get and can provide you with that much-needed relief and comfort! Though you may have to keep going back since they tend to wear out in a month or two.
Reasons for Getting Orthotics
As mentioned, orthotics provide several benefits that will definitely help you out. Though there are good reasons in getting orthotics! Listed below are some of the reasons you should consider if you should get orthotics:
If you’re feeling discomfort in your feet, then getting orthotics might be the right step for you. (Get it? Step?) People who work in the retail industry or whose work involves standing for long periods of time should try this out too. Aside from people who stand up all day, people with fasciitis, flat feet, high arches, and bunions should try using orthotics too.
2. Overpronation
According to Cleveland Clinic here is the definition of overpronation. Overpronation happens when your gait (the way you walk or run) eventually causes the arches of your feet to flatten more than they would normally. Using orthotics will help you with extra support and stability. 3. People with Flat Feet or High Arches
When you have either flat feet or a high arch, your balance may become impaired from this. When you use orthotics, what this does is increase your stability making it easier to walk.
4. Joint Pain
In overcoming joint pain, you must try using orthotics. As someone who has battled joint pains most of my life, I know a great relief giver when I see one. Using orthotics greatly helped in reducing my joint pains. Orthotics can help correct alignment issues, redistribute forces and reduce stress on the joints.
Tips on Picking the Right one
If you plan on getting over-the-counter orthotic shoes, then you have a few things to keep in mind. Though remember to base what you’re getting with the person who will use it. If it is for an elderly loved one, have them come with you or ask them beforehand so they can tell you what they need!
It’s shocking how most people don’t know their foot and shoe size. Getting the right size of shoes for your feet is one of the most important things you need to do! Of course, when you do get the right size, then you’ll be able to get the right size orthotics. You need your actual proper foot size when getting general orthotics. The reason for this is that they will only work if you get the right ones. There are slight slopes and curves that help with pain and support for particular parts of your feet.
When looking for a good orthotic shoe component, you need to be sure of what you want. There are a lot of general orthotics that give both pain or discomfort relief and support. But others are more focused on one than the other. If you are interested in learning more about common causes of foot pain, then check this article out! You should get thicker or firmer orthotics when going for support. When going for relief, I also suggest thicker ones but go for memory foam rather than gel-based ones. Though for the most part, technology has been good and there are better orthotics now in the market!
When getting orthotic shoe components, you need to decide where you’d be using them. If you’re more of a casual walker or jogger, then the best ones to get would be memory foam orthotics. But if you plan on going for high-intensity activities then the best ones to get would be ones made from gel. Both materials have their own pros and cons. Though what matters is what you’ll be using the orthotics for and how often. As much as possible, I will always recommend memory foam insoles because they are like clouds. They mold to whatever foot shape you have so you won’t even have to worry about compatibility.
Personalized Orthotics
Now, if you want long-lasting support and comfort, consider getting personalized orthotic shoes. These inserts are custom-made by a “foot doctor” or podiatrist. They make it by scanning and actually diagnosing your feet for any irregularities.
Remember though that you can only get personalized ones in one way. That is by consulting and having a podiatrist make your orthotics. They are experts and do wonders for your foot and ankle health!
What are Orthopedic shoes?
Orthopedic shoes are footwear used to fit and help any therapeutic needs. It means that they’re shoes that deal with any foot abnormalities or deformities. Because they’re shoes, they also help with problems with the heel and ankle.
Orthopedic shoes are only ever custom-made. That is because they only go for people with actual feet deformities or difficulties. podiatrists make them especially to fit a particular foot!
Benefits of Orthopedic Shoes
People who do get orthopedic shoes are in urgent need of relief and support. They are the ones that find it difficult to even stand when using regular shoes. Even if they were to use orthotics, they’d still feel a level of pain and discomfort.
That’s why orthopedic shoes are sought after. They give people, particularly the elderly, the chance to walk, run or even exercise. Not only that, they can do so with little to no foot pain and ample support and comfort!
Should I Get Orthotic Shoes or Orthopedic Shoes?
Again, if you’ve already asked the question before chances are you should! Though if you do plan on getting orthopedic shoes, you’ll need an actual foot condition. It would be a waste if you or an elderly loved one gets one without any existing foot conditions.
The reason for this is that you can get the almost same amount of relief and comfort with orthotics. That is if you don’t have any abnormalities with your feet and heels. I also don’t really recommend getting them if they’re only for slight corrections.
When are Orthopedic Shoes Necessary?
Problems with your feet can cause a lot of unnecessary pain and discomfort. Not just from your feet, heel, and legs, but also from other parts of the body! Aside from foot or even leg pain, people can also get back pain from improper shoes! That’s why orthopedic shoes are necessary for people having these problems. Again, as I said earlier, only really go for orthopedic shoes if orthotic inserts don’t work for you. Of course, if the orthopedic diagnosed and prescribed one, you need orthopedic shoes. Don’t neglect your feet, they’re the ones that take you anywhere and everywhere!
Tips on Picking the Right one
Unlike the tips I gave for orthotic shoes, orthopedic shoes can only be custom-made. If you look for or find ready-made orthopedic shoes, chances are they’re fake! As for getting the best one for you or your elderly loved one, here are my tips:
When looking for good shoes, you need to make sure that they fit well! Since orthopedic shoes are custom-made, usually you don’t get this type of problem. But, there are instances that people prefer wider or a little more space in their shoes.
Of course, it goes without saying that ill-fitting shoes are still bad for you. That’s why you won’t be able to get that much space. But of course, getting a little bit of breathing room is fine and also recommended!
Padding and Breathability
Breathability means that your shoes are able to keep your little puppies cool and dry! Having breathable fabric used on orthopedic shoes is a must! Though of course that’ll depend on the type of condition you or your elderly loved one have.
Aside from breathability, you also need to look out for the amount of padding. This is the reason why orthopedic shoes can help with any foot problems. The padding keeps the feet in place, absorbs shock and the curves help in the treatment needed.
Orthopedic shoes are long-lasting and will be useful for a long period of time. That is why a lot of recently made ones have upgradability features. Podiatrists will often make pairs that have removable insoles and shoelaces.
Getting the option of upgradability is a must. The reason for this is to have other options when orthopedic shoes aren’t that effective. Instead of getting a new pair, you can just get orthotic insoles.
Slip-Ons or Velcro Straps
Because orthopedic shoes are custom-made, you can have requests for your shoes. The best ones for me would be getting rid of shoelaces and using velcro straps or even slip-on shoes. Shoelaces can be a bother for a lot of people, especially the elderly.
Should I get Orthotic Shoes or Orthopedic Shoes?
I’ve already mentioned earlier the differences between orthotics and orthopedic shoes. I’ve also given the benefits in getting either of the two. But, to recap:
Usability and Maintenance
If you plan on getting shoes that are ready to use immediately, then you should get orthotics. You can find and buy orthotics easily in almost every mall and even in convenience stores! After buying a pair, you can slip them on in any shoe you have and you’ll be good to go!
Orthopedic shoes are also easy to use and are readily available. After having them made, you won’t have to fuss about inserting any insole and such. In fact, you won’t have to look for any other shoes since you’ll only be using your orthopedic shoes.
Here, orthotics shine brighter. The reason for that is because you won’t have to settle for one pair of shoes. You can use orthotics in any of your favorite shoes.
For orthopedic shoes though, you’ll have to make sure you ask for customizations that you like. Color and design will depend on your request and the skill of the maker. Though for the most part, people like the look their orthopedic shoes have.
Here, orthopedic shoes shine brighter. That is because they’re way more effective in dealing with foot, heel, ankle and even back problems. These pairs of shoes were actually made to address these particular issues.
Orthotic shoes though will only really be effective with problems of the feet, heel and ankle. As insoles though, you’ll definitely feel comfort and support. Plus, orthopedic shoes become more effective for some when used together with orthotics!
Generally, orthotics are a lot cheaper than orthopedic shoes. The former are just insoles while the latter are entire shoes. Though there are instances where custom-made orthotics can become more expensive. It really only depends on the customizations done.
Though in the long run, orthopedic shoes will cheaper, for me. The reason for this is that orthotics will become bad sooner than shoes. All the pressure from walking or standing channels to the insoles. That is why they go bad or ineffective after some time.
You getting either orthotics or orthopedic shoes will always be a win. The benefits that both can give are a must-have in your and your elderly loved one’s life! There’s really no “orthotic vs orthopedics” conflict since both may be a bit different but can be used at the same time. I hope that I was able to explain well enough for you guys to make informed decisions in getting a pair. Love your feet just as much as you love every other part of your body!
